Hong Kong and Macao residents enjoy the same treatment as local residents when it comes to the application for social medical insurance, according to an announcement released by Healthcare Security Administration of Guangdong Province on July 1st.

Based on the social insurance law, employers are required to pay contributions to the social insurance funds for their employees, and guarantee Hong Kong and Macao employees enjoy the same treatment as local employees.
Hong Kong, Macao students studying in Guangdong
Universities, research institutes and vocational schools should give Hong Kong and Macao students equal access to the basic medical insurance for urban and rural residents. Hong Kong and Macao students also enjoy the same government subsidy and medical insurance as local students.
Hong Kong, Macao residents with mainland residence permit
Hong Kong and Macao residents who are temporarily unemployed but with mainland residence permit for Hong Kong, Macao and Taiwan residents, can contribute to the basic pension and basic medical insurance for urban and rural residents, according to a new regulation which was released on January 1st 2020.
According to the Healthcare Security Administration, huge differences exist in the health care systems and health insurance policies of Guangdong, Hong Kong and Macao. However, Guangdong has been working on the ‘insurance connect’ between the three places since the development plan of the Greater Bay Area was released in 2019.
Shenzhen Hospital of the University of Hong Kong started the cross-border healthcare service which allows Hong Kong elderly people to pay the fee through the healthcare voucher released by HK SAR. The service enables direct transaction between the Hong Kong Department of Health and Shenzhen Hospital of University of Hong Kong.
